Press Report Primed for 2014 Flight Stakes

September 30th, 2014

Running home to finish a credible seventh in what was without doubt her biggest racing test in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last time out, trainer Lee Curtis is confident of a successful performance from Press Report in this weekend’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Jumping from the gates only fairly in the Golden Rose, Press Report was forced to settle off the pace of the race’s early leaders, finding a clear gap upon reaching the final straight and laying a great account for herself in finishing just two lengths of champion Hallowed Crown.

Yet to contest a competitive event over a mile, Curtis told AAP he has been pleased with the progressing form of the Written Tycoon filly, and is confident young jockey Winona Costin will get the best from his sole filly in the 2014 Flight Stakes.

“The 1600 metres is a query for most of them but Winona feels she will get the trip easily,” Curtis said.

“It seems there’s a different filly winning each week so hopefully it’s our turn.

“My only concern is that her best runs have been at Rosehill not Randwick.”

Securing one win and two places from her eight competitive race starts so far, Press Report charged home to finish second behind Memorial on debut on November 13th before immediately returning to the paddock.

Stamping her claims as one to watch over three starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Press Report finished second to subsequent Golden Slipper champion Mossfun in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) first-up before running on for fourth in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) on March 15th; again returning to the paddock after finishing a luckless seventh when blocked for a run in the final straight of the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

Finishing fourth amongst classy competition in the Inglis $5 million Race Series Handicap (1200m) first-up this time before breaking through for a maiden race win in the TAB Early Quaddie Plate (1300m) on August 2nd, the three-year-old out of Grenada was disappointing when failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 23rd, but returned to competitive form in the Golden Rose.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Flight Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning. is currently offering the best odds on the 2014 Flight Stakes, for which Press Report is available at generous odds of $26 for success.
