Ocean Tempest a Likely 2015 Flight Stakes Contestant

September 29th, 2015

James Cummings has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Ocean Tempest through a short but consistent racing career so far, and has revealed he will likely accept a position in the final field for Saturday’s 2015 Flight Stakes with the talented three-year-old.

Yet to finish outside the first three through three competitive starts, Ocean Tempest made an impressive and competitive transition to black type racing in her most recent start; producing a strong turn of foot to run on for third in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) last weekend.

Appearing to be searching for more ground, Cummings told Racing Ahead he is also considering a berth in the Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m) over course and distance on Saturday, but believes she will not be out of her depth in the 2015 Flight Stakes.

“I’ve got her down in the Flight Stakes to take on the family’s other horse Speak Fondly, but we also have her down for the Dulcify,” Cummings said.

“She is no doubt going to be much shorter in the market (in the Dulcify) and conceivably a much better chance.

“The filly is a winner and is black-type placed, so would it be too bad to sail into second in a Group 1 like the Flight Stakes or does she have some chance of threatening the favourites in that race.

“We are still giving that good thought, but one thing that I do know for sure is that she has pulled up fantastic.

“She is going to be in the paddock on Monday regardless of where I run her and we have a really progressive filly for the autumn next year.

“We are leaning towards having a go at the big prize, but I am a big advocate for small fish are sweet.

“We won’t get this chance again, but we will try and do what is best for the owners horse.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to her debut, Ocean Tempest stamped herself as a filly to follow when beating a number of notable runners to the line in the Strawberry Hill Stud Maiden (1100m) on August 25th; progressing to second in the TAB Place Multi BM67 (1200m) in her only other start prior to the Reginald Allen Quality.

The 2015 Flight Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
