Eleven runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Carnival’s standout three-year-old fillies.
Speak Fondly has been a standout for Gai Waterhouse this season, but the Randwick trainer is set to be offered four good chances for success in the 2015 Flight Stakes after also including Kimberley Star, Flamboyant Lass and Sempre Libera in the final field.
Speak Fondly stamped her claims as a filly to follow when taking out the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) in autumn but failed to make any impact whatsoever in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
Returning this time for consecutive wins in each of the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m), Speak Fondly ran on for second in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last time out.
Kimberley Star claimed consecutive wins in three minor races earlier this time; progressing to second in the Silver Shadow Stakes and third in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) before placing third in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) last time.
Finishing outside the first three only once in six career starts, Flamboyant Lass charged home to win the Schweppes BM70 (1000m) first-up this time before placing second in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1300m) last weekend.
Undoubtedly the unknown quantity of the Waterhouse attack, Sempre Libera ran on for a credible fourth in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) last time and appears as though she will relish a step-up to a mile.
The John Thompson-trained Honesta is sure to receive a dream run in transit from barrier 1, while kiwi raider Sofia Rosa will need plenty of luck from the outside barrier 11 in the 2015 Flight Stakes.
